HACKERS HARASS BOXING BOSS

Early this month hackers accessed the yahoo account of the Kenya Boxing secretary general Shabaan Ogolla and deleted all his business and personal contacts after sending an SOS mail to everyone.
The mail asked for assistance claiming Shabaan was in dire financial constraints in the Philippines. It read: “I misplaced my wallet on my way to the hotel where my money and other valuable things were kept. Presently my passport and things are been held by the hotel management pending my payments. I will like you to assist me with a loan of $1550 to sort-out my hotel bills and to get myself back home. I'm presently in Malolos, Philippines.”
Shabban got a call from a worried Kenyan boxer based in Denmark, Ashira Oure, asking if he indeed needed help. “This is a real setback for me as I have lost all my business contacts besides being made to look like a con artist. I’ve had to call the secretary general of Africa Boxing Union in Uganda, C.D Mindra, who in turn informed the World Boxing Council to ignore the email, and any other suspicious emails from my yahoo inbox.”
Shabban also hinted that the email hacking could be ‘his enemies who are out to get him.’

AFRO FUSION ACT ABBI TO FIGHT AIDS STIGMA

Kenyan Afro fusion act Abbi Nyinza is part of an anti-Aids stigma album that was launched at the French Cultural Centre on Tuesday night.
Titled Songs of Hope, the CD is a global effort by Family Health International (FHI) in partnership with people living with HIV/Aids and the musical community in seven countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Abbi’s track, The Little Tree is the second in the album. It’s a composition inspired by Sonia, a teenager at the Thika School of the Blind, who is living with HIV and is visually impaired. Her touching story inspired Abbi to write a song about a resilient life spirit that refuses to surrender to HIV.
“Sonia was born with the virus and her dream is that one day there will be a cure for HIV. By singing the song, the idea is to reach out to people living positively and not to stigmatise them,” Abbi said.
John McWilliam, Senior Director, FHI Africa Regional Office, said: “Songs are used in all cultures to express the deepest feelings of individuals. Through this project Family Health International wanted to capture the feelings and values of people dealing every day with HIV. By doing so and making these songs available to the public, others may gain the courage to sing their own songs of hope and the barriers of stigma and discrimination will be finally broken.”
The Songs of Hope music CD also features artistes from Senegal, Mozambique, Guyana, Haiti, Nepal, and China - and people living with HIV on the project.

IAN MBUGUA: IT’S GETTING TOUGHER!

After Kenyan contestant Debarl Inea mercilessly butchered Nameless’ hit song ‘Deadly’, on Sunday’s nomination show, the Tusker Project Fame judge Ian Mbugua admitted that the competition is getting to its most challenging stage.
For once, Ian politely noted a few things need to be fixed to enable the contestants to do their best, like letting them choose the songs they would like to perform. “It does not make much sense to give them a song that they do not feel.”
That is perhaps what earned Rwanda’s Christian an eviction from the house. He’s on record, saying that he was familiar with about five English songs - given his upbringing in the then French-speaking country.
The candid Ian was surprised that the contestants were made to sing from playback, as opposed to the band. “With only three weeks to go, you’d expect them to be using the band,” Ian remarked, in an interview after the live recording of Sunday’s show.
With the elimination of the weakest performers over the past week, the seven remaining contestants can now ill afford to perform badly.
Indeed all but Kenya’s Patricia Kihoro and Uganda’s Leah Atute have been on probation. And for Debarl it is the first time. Uganda’s Caroline Nabulime, Rwanda’s Alpha Rwirangira and Kenya’s Bernard Ng’ang’a a.k.a Ng’ang’alito, are also on probation.

TEDDY: I HAD TO PACK LAST MINUTE

Teddy Muthusi the evicted Kenyan contestant was the first to leave the Big Brother house after only five days. In a telephone interview Teddy said, “I thought I would last longer, I did not even cross my mind. I did not pack my bags till the very last minute,” he said.
The now jobless advertising genius said even as the ladies were being ushered to the house, “I was numb, I was still asking myself ‘what do you mean I’m out?’,” adding, “here goes an edge I would have used to my advantage.”
Teddy reckons that he became an eviction candidate because of his long diary session.
“Now that you ask that, it might have been the things I said. Done differently I would have told Big Brother the things that made me laugh and not about the housemates. I forgot I was also talking to their countries.”

KENYAN RAPPERS CAMEO ON MTV SERIES

Ten Kenyan rappers will be part of the MTV Staying Alive Ignite TV series dubbed Shuga. The three from P Unit, Nonini, Nameless, Juliani, Jimmy Gait, Madtraxx and DJ Adrian have all made cameo appearances in the drama series.
P Unit and Nonini play friends of lead character Skola (played by David Omwange), appearing in scenes where they hang out in a parking lot with Skola, his buddy Kennedy (Antony Mwangi) and Sindi (Valerie Kimani) and indulge in a little freestyling.
Triple-MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain nominee Nameless features in a nightclub scene shot while radio and club favourite DJ Adrian puts in some hot deck action during the same scene. Both Nameless and DJ Adrian agreed to do the shoot because of their personal commitment to promoting safe sex.
Gospel singer Jimmy Gait appears as himself in a gospel choir scene in which he freestyles a song that he wrote on set – a moving track entitled “Just Let Him Know” - which ultimately encourages Eva Kanyang’onda’s character, Virginia to reveal her most intimate secret.
Madtraxx features in a powerful scene where he appears as a guest (playing himself) on Skola’s radio show, Campus Radio, discussing condoms and safe sex.
Juliani appears in a cameo role as a student pitching for a job, rapping a verse from his hit song Biceps during his pitch.
Funded by MTV Staying Alive, PEPFAR, HIV-Free Generation and UNICEF, the series is to motivate sexually active youth and young adults under 25 to modify their sexual behaviour. It will premiere on MTV base (DStv Channel 322) and on terrestrial TV stations Citizen TV and Nation TV in November 2009.

EVE D’SOUZA CAMPAIGNS FOR CLEAN BEACHES

Radio personality Eve D Souza is the ambassador for a campaign aimed at our cleaning up of the beaches along the Kenyan coastline. The campaign dubbed Green Generation pledges to plant 10 million trees by 2010 in a bid to conserve the environment for future generations.
Eve, the brains behind the campaign, explained how the idea came to fruition, “I was sitting at lunch feeling really frustrated about the situation in Kenya, the loss of Mau Forest, the power and water rationing and really felt the urge to do something. Anything. Being in the media, we all have so much influence and a lot of resources at hand, but I just felt very Superficial, like we really weren’t doing anything apart from talking about the problem...over and over and over again,” the Capital Radio presenter said.
She joined up with fellow radio presenter Chao Tolle who runs the Capital Kids Club which also has a tree planting programme.
“Kenya has the second most polluted waters in Africa so if we could all do our bit by taking part of the clean up it’s a big first step towards saving our shores,” Eve advised.
The areas targeted for cleaning are Jomo Kenyatta Beach in North Coast, Tiwi at Diani, Marine Park and Silversand in Malindi as well as Kikambala, Kilifi, Shimoni and Watamu where clean up stations will be set up.
Kenya Forest Service and the Ministry of Environment are in support of the campaign.

LYDIA TALKS OF NEO-RACISM IN KENYAN FILM INDUSTRY

Lydia with Alex Konstantaras of Jitu Films and Lupita Nyongo

Veteran actress Lydia Nyambura who is now a film producer and director in the local film industry talked about her own frustrations.
The popular face in local productions said, “The problem with the local film industry is with the producers. Unfortunately, it’s never about your acting skills but rather, whether you are brown or yellow and skinny. The rest just doesn’t matter, not even how lousy your acting is. It’s about time local producers gave good actors credit, regardless of how dark skinned they may be.
“Why is it always about skin colour? I thought we were civilized people and way beyond that. I’d call that neo-racism where blacks discriminate against fellow blacks based on the tone of their skin. It's pathetic. I’ve had my fair share of discrimination owing to my dark complexion.”
Lydia refers to herself as an actor not as an actress because ‘why don’t they call female doctors doctresses, what’s with all this sexism?’

GORY PICS OF CHAMELEONE'S LEGS AFTER SURGERY

Ugandan singer Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone had an operation last year October after he fell down three floors at a hotel in Arusha.
When asked what happened Chameleone could not explain how the accident occurred. The singer recalled that he had entered his hotel room after his music show, changed clothes and slept. But he was shocked to find himself on the first floor of the hotel an hour later surrounded by people who were screaming ‘thief’.
“When I tried to move, I could not get up,” Chameleone told The New Vision. “I was in great pain. I think both of my legs were broken. I identified myself as Jose Chameleone. That is when some onlookers rushed to call my tour promoters.” His promoters took him to Arusha Hospital, where he contacted his wife to charter an Eagle Air plane at $9,000 (about Sh 639,000) to evacuate him. He was airlifted from Kilimanjaro Airport to Entebbe Airport.
A Dr. Kenneth Obwot, who was on the team that evacuated the singer, attributed Chameleone’s accident to sleepwalking. He said Chameleone could have gotten up in his dreams and walked through the glass windows. The singer was alone in the room and the door was locked. Obwot noted that the accident could have been fatal. The fact that the singer does a lot of exercise could have saved his life, he added.

NIGERIANS ANGRY AT POTRAYAL ON DISTRICT 9

District 9 a South African movie production has angered Nigerians for it’s portrayal of them. In retaliation they have started a Facebook group, District 9 Hates Nigerians. Some have even come up with a petition to have it banned. Tola Onanuga’s statement in the UK Guardian contradicts his angry countrymen. He said: “If District 9 really does hate Nigerians, it clearly hates its powerful, white characters even more. Objecting to Nigerians being portrayed as morally bankrupt criminals seems pointless when almost every group of characters in the film have little or no regard for the law.”
East Africans should be offended as the film’s Nigerians speak in Kiswahili and not Hausa or Yoruba.

GERMAN PROMOTER: JIMWATT WAS HOSPITALISED FOR A WEEK

The promoters who organised Jimwatt’s trip to Germany have broken the silence and addressed the rumours about the baby-faced rapper’s admission to a hospital in the European country.
After Calif Record Camp stuck to a ‘No comment’ on the issue, the Kenya Development Associates (KDA) – Germany and Jiikaze NGO led by Phillis Gruesges gave an explanation on what ailed the Under 18 rapper.
An email sent by Mickie Ojijo, the KDA Secretary, states: “Jimwatt suffered a severe bout of headache due to environmental change, common not only to artistes making their first trip to Europe but to most people in general. As a result he was forced to cut short his German tour and Stella Mwangi a.k.a STL who was on her way from Kenya to Oslo stepped in to continue with the promoter’s programme.”
Addressing the hospitalisation rumours, Mickie added: “Rumours being circulated by charlatans masquerading as stars in Germany that the singer is insane in a rehabilitation centre are unfounded. James is relaxing and rehearsing for his new songs to be launched later this year. He will be in Nairobi soon to enlighten you further on his programme.”
KDA is an association for Kenyan professionals, students and businessmen and their German counter parts to discuss issues pertaining to education, development, trade, culture as well as political reforms process in Kenya.

A-list hollywood celeb couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were at the Mara from September 10. The couple who are always hounded by paparazzi, quietly entered Kenya with their entourage, and spent a few days at a camp in the Mara.
A source says, “Angelina and Brad hired the whole camp to ensure they had privacy.” The Mr and Mrs Smith stars checked into the Cottars 1920s Safari Camp, which is situated in the Maasai Mara, bordering the Serengeti and Loliondo ecosystem.
They were there to “relax and shop for charity projects in the area,” the source said.
Angelina who is the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) goodwill ambassador spent their Saturday (September 12) with refugees at the Dadaab refugee camp on the Kenya-Somali border.
Apparently her visit was so hush hush even some of the UNHCR officials did not know that the actress was going to visit Daadab, another source intimated.

That aside. Y’all need to know that the Cottars 1920s Safari Camp has also played host to big American stars like Keira Knightley, covered by Vogue and reviewed by the Conde Nast Traveler.

In one of her show the gloriously hairheaded blonde Tyra had a guest named Vincente who went on the air saying he didn’t like dark-skinned black people. When contacted after the show, Vincente said, “I know I am hated all over right now. I hope you understand that this was for television purposes only. We were told how to act and what characters to portray. I am not done with the Tyra show yet, I will be going back.
